Intermediate Drawing: Composition and Light

This course is for students who have a basic understanding of drawing but are ready to delve deeper, make longer drawings, and find their own personal drawing style. The focus will be on how composition (form, space, placement) and volume (lights, darks, and tonality) interact to build compelling drawings.
Perfect for painters who want to strengthen their paintings by improving their drawing.
Working in a Series: Content and Color

Color is an important and powerful means of expression in creating works of art. Color can evoke a memory, express joy, mystery, fear, calm or chaos. In this class, students will refine and energize color relationships as they develop their personal vision in a series of small paintings.
Acrylic Painting

In this class, students will learn the basics of working with acrylic paint. Students will work over a five week period on one large painting. We will discuss color mixing, composition, layering, blending, cropping and more. We will delve into realistic and abstract methods of painting to create one unique image. Looking to historical and contemporary artists, students will explore different ways of approaching the medium and means of expression..
Watercolor: Landscape Abstraction

Students will use photographs as source material for discovering ways to abstract the landscape. Students will develop their personal interpretation of the landscape as they hone technique and color mixing skills. Please bring landscape photographs or books containing the work of realist landscape painters. Students will need watercolor paper (9" x 12” or 11" x 14”), a palette, brushes and paint.
Basic watercolor experience required.
Oil Painting: Working from Photographs

Photographs are essential references for painters when used properly. This class tackles photography/painting related issues such as how to use a photo as a reference - not just something to copy, what kind of image best translates into a painting, how to edit a ‘busy’ scene, combining sources and finding a strong composition.
New students will learn the basics of oil painting as more experienced painters continue to develop and refine their skills.
Mixed Water Media x 2

Students will explore a variety of mixed water media and techniques to learn about composition while creating two finished paintings over four weeks.
