Drawing Basics

Are you new to drawing, or do your drawings turn out differently than you’d like? Observational drawing can be less intimidating by learning a few foundational techniques like how line, shape, and shading work together, as well as the basics of strong composition. Learn the ways in which different drawing mediums such as charcoal, graphite, and markers evoke different moods. We’ll also explore varieties of paper and paper sizes.
Working in a Series: Understanding Value

Of all the variables employed by artists, value is the hardest worker. We can be loose and casual with our drawing, we can be personally expressive with color as long as the relative values are reasonably true. By understanding the role that value plays in making art, artists can produce a believable sense of space, light and substance. Students will start to develop a thematic body of work using different source materials. Students may work in the medium of their choice.
Observational Drawing

Work on your observational drawing skills in this two-night workshop. We will take it slow and get to know our subjects by looking hard and describing with our tools.
Texture into Pattern

Dive deeply into two elements of design: texture and pattern. Students will create imaginary landscapes using found texture and illusionary space, then they will translate that textured landscape into flat pattern. In this drawing and design class students will gain sensitivity to texture and keys to creating unique patterns. Suitable for all levels.
Oil Painting: Color and Light

Color is a function of light. This class will examine how different lighting situations change color and how to depict those particulars in an oil painting. Materials, color mixing, composition and value will be covered in this three session class. Students will choose their own subject matter and work from photographs, sketches, still life and/or the imagination. New students will learn the basics of oil painting as more experienced painters continue to develop and refine their skills.
Mixed Media Abstraction

In this class, students will create a small body of work using a variety of media. Techniques discussed include watercolor, pastel, graphite, acrylic, block printing, screen printing and more. Looking to contemporary artists, students will learn new ways of approaching these processes and how to incorporate them into their practice. Students will be encouraged to work with speed and to experiment.
