Acrylic Painting Basics

Using still life objects, students will learn how to build a painting from the ground up. We will start with finding a strong composition, then learn how to mix a simple color scheme to block in big shapes using lights and darks. Finally, we will practice layering detail using a variety of painting techniques. Art history is our guide, as we see how other artists apply these techniques to make interesting paintings.
Watercolor: Exploring Abstraction

Watercolor is full of surprises: A wash of color can suggest a form as it runs across the page in unpredictable and beautiful ways. The fluidity and spontaneity of the medium is perfect for exploring abstraction. In this class students will work with a variety of watercolor materials and focus on finding ways to abstract imagery using photographs and other sources.

In this class students will reinterpret a master painting by using cut papers. Students will gain insights into an artist’s design and color choices and develop skills in creative decision making.
