At Flicker Street Studio, we have small classes which ensures individual instruction.  Instructors put a lot of care and work into offering the best classes possible.  Please look over our class POLICIES before you sign up. We are looking forward to teaching you this season!

Beginner - Covers the very basic techniques of the medium at a slower pace and offers a lot of individual help for all students. No prior experience in the medium is required.

Beginner-Intermediate - Reviews basic techniques for beginners as needed, and offers practice exercises to assist in gaining confidence and experience with the medium. 

Intermediate-Advanced  - The student has a basic knowledge of the medium.  The class offers more challenging exercises and encourages individual expression.

    Hamlett Dobbins offers up new insight and projects in this mixed media class. Students will explore a variety of methods for generating abstract images. We will discuss the origins of abstraction and the part it plays in a number of artists' work. By examining how abstraction exists in our everyday lives, students will be given insight into this sometimes mysterious subject matter. This class is appropriate for beginners as well as students who have taken Hamlett's previous classes.

    This one-day workshop will explore the myriad uses of acrylic paint. There will be demonstrations as well as activities to help students understand how acrylic paints work and how they can be incorporated into an artistic toolbox. We will look at the various materials and techniques including hi-flow, fluid, and heavy body acrylics as well as a variety of mediums. We will also see how xerox transfers and collage can be done better using acrylic media. This informative bootcamp will initiate the novice and energize the veteran alike.

  • Screen Printing

    Students will learn the basics of screen printing in this two session workshop. Screen printing is a form of printmaking that does not require a press and can easily be incorporated into any artist's practice with very little equipment. This class is for beginners as well as more experienced printmakers who are looking to expand their knowledge of this fun process. Screen printing is a great technique for painters, mixed media artists, textile artists, and more!

    Drawing with graphite goes far beyond the No. 2 pencil. Discover the wide of range lights and darks that hard, medium and soft pencils offer. Learn the beautiful effects of water soluble graphite. See how an eraser and smudge stick create marks and texture. Watch what happens when you mix several types of graphite to combine shading and line in one drawing. We’ll see how graphite lends itself to both sketching as well as longer drawings on different types of paper.

    Artists Peggi Kroll Roberts, Elizabeth Peyton, Milton Avery, Michelle Nicole, and Erin O’Neill will be our guides to the processes and dynamics of contemporary portraiture. Students will draw and paint from photographs and a live model. Work will focus on simplifying facial features through value and shape. We will practice the use of low key and high key values with a limited palette and discuss how variations in value affect the mood of an artwork.

    Using still life objects, students will learn how to build a painting from the ground up. We will start with finding a strong composition, then learn how to mix a simple color scheme to block in big shapes using lights and darks. Finally, we’ll practice layering detail using a variety of painting techniques. Art history be our guide, as we see how other artists apply these techniques to make interesting paintings.

    Watercolor is full of surprises: A wash of color can suggest a form as it runs across the page in unpredictable and beautiful ways. The fluidity and spontaneity of the medium is perfect for exploring abstraction. In this class students will work with a variety of watercolor materials and focus on finding ways to abstract imagery using photographs and other sources.

  • Oil Painting: Fast and Loose

    Loosen up and enjoy the process as we use the versatility of oil paint to paint fast and small. The focus of this class is simplifying the process by painting quickly wet-on-wet on multiple small canvases and panels. This “Daily Painting” approach facilitates growth and confidence. Students will choose their own subject matter or work from a still life. New students will learn the basics of oil painting as more experienced painters continue to develop and refine their skills.

  • Collage: A Master Study
