At Flicker Street Studio, we have small classes which ensures individual instruction.  Instructors put a lot of care and work into offering the best classes possible.  Please look over our class policies before you sign up. We are looking forward to teaching you this season!

Beginner - Covers the very basic techniques of the medium at a slower pace and offers a lot of individual help for all students. No prior experience in the medium is required.

Beginner-Intermediate - Reviews basic techniques for beginners as needed, and offers practice exercises to assist in gaining confidence and experience with the medium. 

Intermediate-Advanced  - The student has a basic knowledge of the medium.  The class offers more challenging exercises and encourages individual expression.

  • Refining and Expanding Your Practice with Hamlett Dobbins

    Focus on developing and improving your individual studio practice through a series of lectures and discussions exploring the working methods of a variety of local, regional, and internationally known artists. Each week Hamlett Dobbins and fellow students will provide feedback on work done outside of class. Learn how to articulate intention and listen to feedback. Find words for the wordless.

  • Working Big with Watercolor with Nancy Cheairs

    $125 | Some Materials Included | Beginner and up

    Achieve the transparency and immediacy unique to watercolor painting in this fun and accessible workshop that incorporates a series of simple studio exercises encouraging students to explore the fundamentals of watercolor. Students will work from a still life on 22" x 30" 300 lb paper in order to loosen up and experiment with different watercolor techniques. Discussions on composition, under-drawing with pencil and light brushwork, beginning demonstrations with practical still-life sketches will start the class. Color mixing is demonstrated and practiced, as well as the relationship between observed light and the effects that can be achieved with the reduced value range of a painted surface.

    Students will bring their own paints, brushes and palettes and the studio will provide paper.

    Acrylic image transfers create a beautifully mysterious effect, especially when combined with other acrylic paint surfaces. Learn a variety of ways to build grounds that will be the foundation for the image transfer, and then how to layer on top of the transfers to add more depth and dimension using washes and stencils. This workshop is great for the beginner as an introduction to acrylic paint, as well as for the experienced painter looking for a new application.

  • Oil Painting: Understanding Color with Sunny Montgomery

    This class focuses on color and color mixing as we paint from a still life. Matisse will be our guide as we explore color relationships, value and composition. New students will learn the basics of oil painting as more experienced painters continue to develop and refine their skills.

  • Transforming Hardback Books with Sunny Montgomery

    We will disassemble a hardback book and rebind it with our own pages to repurpose as a sketchbook or journal. Decorative paper will personalize your creation. Basic bookmaking experience is helpful but not necessary.

  • Mixed Media Drawing with Melissa Dunn

    When different drawing mediums are combined and layered they add texture, volume, and personal expression to an art work. Dry mediums like graphite and conte’ crayon work beautifully with wet mediums such as watercolor pencils and inks. Learn the characteristics of each medium as you practice drawing techniques like perspective, contour, hatching, and shading.

  • Watercolor: Working Fast and Small with Nancy Cheairs

    Achieve the transparency and immediacy unique to watercolor painting in this fun and accessible workshop that incorporates a series of simple studio exercises encouraging students to explore the fundamentals of watercolor. Using a limited palette, a few brushes and small pieces of 140 lb and 300 lb watercolor paper the emphasis of the class will be on developing skill in controlling the paint and learning to reserve and pull back highlights to create the brilliant and delicate range of tones that define watercolor. We will explore wet and dry-brush, layering thin washes, mark-making and methods for reserving and lightening areas.

    The focus of this workshop is color, value and composition; with cakes, cupcakes and assorted confectionary as our Wayne Thiebaud inspired subject matter. New students will learn the basics of oil painting as more experienced painters continue to develop and refine their skills. Paint your cake and eat it too!

    This bootcamp approach to learning about acrylic paints and their many forms will provide students with a variety of techniques and approaches. This workshop provides students with the tools (and a few tricks) they might need to kickstart their practice with this water-based medium.
