    Whether you’ve made one drawing or a thousand, drawing never stops teaching us. The key to a strong drawing is combining observational skills with a willingness to take chances. In the first week of this workshop, students will use charcoal and work observationally, thinking about basic elements like line, value, gesture, and composition. In the second week, exercises in experimentation and improvisation using different mediums will be added into the mix, letting imagination and noticing work together. Open to all levels.

  • Acrylic Painting: Translating Color Theory into Practice with Laurel Sucsy

    Color is a critical element for self-expression. Understanding colors and values as well as composing and understanding their relationships, is an essential part of an artist’s education. In this class students will explore the various ways that color functions in painting. Using acrylic paint we will practice methods for mixing color as well as examine works of art in which color plays a major role.

  • Oil Painting from Sketches and Photographs with Elizabeth Alley

    Watercolor is a lively medium and has a wide range of expressive possibilities. In this workshop, we will explore the basics of watercolor and methods for achieving its beautiful sparkle and vibrant color. This class will investigate watercolor in its many forms: tubes, cakes, pencils and crayons. Students will experiment with wet into wet, slow layering, dry brush, light to dark, broad to detail and subtractive/additive methods. Discussions will include materials, techniques, and color mixing with lots of practice time devoted to letting go of perfectionist expectations and discovering your individual voice.

  • All About Acrylics with Hamlett Dobbins

    This bootcamp approach to learning about acrylic paints and their many forms will provide students with a variety of techniques and approaches. The two day workshop provides students with the tools (and a few tricks) they might need to kickstart their practice with this water-based medium.
