Beginner-Intermediate - Reviews basic techniques for beginners as needed, and offers practice exercises to assist in gaining confidence and experience with the medium.

Intermediate-Advanced  - The student has a basic knowledge of the medium.  The class offers more challenging exercises and encourages individual expression.

    Introduction to Photoshop will introduce students to the basics of this important digital tool. The first day we will explore the nuts and bolts of how to use the program. The second day we will work to find ways to use Photoshop as a tool to advance individual studio work. Students must have Photoshop or Photoshop Elements loaded onto their laptop computers.

    This class encourages the student to explore the languages of abstraction and representation through the still life. The activities in this class will provide the student with a new understanding of abstraction and how it may fit into their own paintings. The instructor will provide a variety of approaches and techniques for discovering abstraction and pattern. The class will include approaches suitable for the beginner yet challenging enough for more advanced painters.

    This class will be a perfect opportunity for students who are interested in the figure and curious about the often misunderstood world of abstraction. We will use drawing and painting materials to investigate a number of new and exciting approaches to abstraction using the figure as a starting point. While this class will build upon lessons learned in the first session's "Drawing and Painting the Figure," it is not necessary to have prior experience.

    Do you enjoy painting but don’t know what to paint? Source material is everywhere, but knowing how to uncover it and turn a spark of an idea into meaningful content can seem like a mystery. By merging conceptual experimentation with painting techniques like washes, layering, brushstroke variation, and color mixing, students will develop both the methods necessary to discover ideas as well as the skills necessary to execute them.     This class will use the figure as a springboard to explore expressive drawing and painting.     A simplified palette, a couple of brushes and small sheets of high quality watercolor paper will be our portal into the world of gestural, expressive painting. Working from brief pencil, ink and watercolor sketches, the students will learn how to loosen up as they explore different watercolor techniques. Students will experiment with different papers, learn about basic composition, color mixing and paint properties but the primary focus of this class is about capturing mood through joyful, experimental watercolor painting. Keep it small and watch your painting expand!
